While stuck in a soul-sucking job and grieving my mom’s passing, backpacking around the world sounded like a great plan. One year off wouldn’t hurt, would it? One year to explore the world, new cultures, meet friends, and maybe even—dare I hope—find love. Thrust into the backpacker’s life, my careful planning nature was ripped from me, replaced by the winds of survival, because trouble found me at every turn.

If you’re looking for a travel guide for city information, this is not it. If you want an adventure, keep reading. These pages are packed with the straight nitty-gritty of the crazy stuff that happens along the way. My emails home act as the anchor for each chapter and are my equivalent to a staged social media photo. But my journals, photographs, and memories deliver the juicy substance behind each carefully crafted email that you can dig in and live through.

I share this with the people who took a similar trip but didn’t write it down. For the people who didn’t have the opportunity to take this journey. For those who are looking for inspiration to take their own adventure. And I hope it gives you a fun escape to cry, cringe, and laugh in the life before smartphones in the late ’90s with a crazy Canadian girl.
